Just A Trim???
I swear that's what I said when I took Tyler to get his hair cut on Friday afternoon. Haley, the girl that usually cuts his hair, is super busy these days and he desperately needed a haircut before he saw Santa on Sunday, so I took him to another girl who's cut his hair one other time. Last time she cut it, she understood what a trim was and she did a good job. So, I take him in on Friday and I explain that we like his hair long, just above his eyes, and over his ears. We just wanted a trim to get it out of his eyes. I'm not sure how she didn't hear the "just a trim" part! She started cutting and I wasn't paying too much attention at first to what she was doing. I was more occupied with keeping Tyler still and talking to him. She was lifting his hair and cutting it and using all different kinds of scissors, but she did that last time, too, so I hadn't been too worried. It usually only takes 10 minutes or so to cut his hair. It kept taking her longer and longer and then I realized that she was totally butchering his hair. The hair we've let grow out for the past 6 months and only trimmed to get it out of his eyes and off his neck. That hair is now gone. I swear it took her over 30 minutes to cut his hair and when she was finished the cut looked like a girl's haircut. It is very short in the back, above his ears, thinned out on top, and he had pointed sideburns on each side. On top of that, it is all gapped up, especially around his lovely cowlick on his forehead. I did take my scissors at home, remove his pointed sideburns, and try to shape it up, but there's only so much I could do. The hair is gone. Thank goodness his hair usually grows quickly.
I learned two valuable lessons from this haircut experience. Number one, make haircut appointments early. If you can't get in with the person who knows how to cut and has cut it for 4 years now, long hair in his eyes is better than a bad haircut for Christmas! Number two, always carry a picture to show anyone new how you like his hair cut. If only I had the cute picture below that Erin took with me that day...he would still have his cute, long, little boy haircut! Let's just say he won't need a haircut for a really LONG time!
